Thanks to the leadership of Senators Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.), the Reuniting Families Act was reintroduced in the Congress this week. The bill contains practical solutions for reducing family immigration visa backlogs and promoting humane and timely reunification of immigrant families. Specifically, the bill includes provisions that would ensure that visas are allocated efficiently, alleviate lengthy wait times that keep legal immigrants and their overseas loved ones separated for years, and decrease measures that prevent family members from obtaining visas.
The current immigration system forces family separation. The new legislation is an American solution we’ve been looking for.
More than 4 million individuals have been waiting in line for years—sometimes even decades—to reunite with their close family members, who are hardworking, taxpaying contributors to America’s economy and society. The Reuniting Families Act will promote a fair and efficient system that family members will be able to go through, rather than around.
Time is of the Essence! We need your help now more than ever to remind our elected officials that family members deserve a chance to unite with their loved ones. Comprehensive immigration reform is incomplete without solutions that will address the broken family immigration system. We must ACT NOW to make sure that the Reuniting Families Act passes this year!
There are three QUICK ACTIONS you can DO TODAY to support family unity:
Together we can restore the broken immigration system and help families everywhere realize the American Dream! Thank you for your support.
