A skilled leader in championing full participation for Asian Americans in the political process, we work to eliminate discriminatory barriers and to enforce the Voting Rights Act (VRA).
We at AAJC and our affiliates provide technical assistance and training on many voter-related issues, including language assistance mandated by the VRA, voter suppression, and election reform (i.e. the Help America Vote Act - HAVA).
Renowned for our authority on the VRA - one of the most important pieces of civil rights legislation of the 1960s - AAJC has worked with the Department of Justice and community-based organizations to coordinate efforts and ensure compliance and assistance. Our support of the VRA has been instrumental to increasing the election of Asian American candidates into office.
AAJC served as a principal partner in a coalition of leading civil rights organizations to educate the public and policy makers on the importance of the VRA, culminating in the successful 2006 reauthorization of sun-setting provisions of the VRA.
Additionally, AAJC has been fully engaged on election reform issues, including working to ensure that HAVAprovisions are enforced to increase access to voting for Asian Americans.
